Ivan Votipka — founder of Lightspeed German Learning. Originally from Serbia. Coaching since 2019, 450+ professionals across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and beyond.

In 2017 I moved to Austria. At the beginning everything was fine. But month by month I felt how much German actually mattered, because I could not communicate properly. Not everyone spoke English and the ones who did were not always willing to switch for me.

The longer I stayed, the harder it got. Ordinary things became the problem: shopping, phone calls, sitting in front of a doctor and not being able to explain what was wrong. At the same time I had friends learning German the traditional way. Very smart guys, engineers, consultants, managers. I never once heard any of them actually speak it, even after months of classes. Some of them, years.

So I knew I did not want to do it that way and waste my time. I had also always wanted to build something of my own. So the idea was simple: build a system that would get me speaking first, and then use it to help other people too. How much time do I need to invest?

Alongside the classes, you need about one hour of your attention per day for the homework. You can split this hour throughout your day. I passed B1/B2 but still can't speak German at work. Is that normal?

Yes, this is very common, and I see it every day among professionals. A certificate does not mean you are fluent at that level. Traditional classes are made for one thing: to help you pass the exam. Your speaking was never really tested, and it was never really trained. That is why you can have a B1 or B2 certificate and still feel like a total beginner when you need to talk.

Maybe you are starting from zero, or maybe you already have an A1, A2, or B2 certificate, but your real speaking level is most probably lower than that.
